Primary Purpose:

Direct and manage the districts fine arts department. Ensure that the development and delivery of the fine arts curriculum and instructional program is effective and efficient, incorporates district goals, and supports student achievement.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university

Valid Texas teaching certificate

Demonstrated competency in instrumental music

Current automatic external defibrillator (AED) certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of fine arts programs

Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program

Knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Ability to interpret data and evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness

Ability to manage budget and personnel

Ability to implement policy and procedures

Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

Ten years of experience as a band classroom teacher

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional and Program Management

1. Oversee the development and delivery of fine arts programs that incorporate district goals and support student achievement.

2. Monitor and reevaluate fine arts programs on an ongoing basis using input from teachers and principals, applied research, and student data to determine effectiveness and improve outcomes. Recommend changes and adjustments to the program where appropriate to meet student needs.

3. Encourage and support student performances, exhibits, and other displays of student work.

4. Ensure that the necessary time, resources, materials, and technology to support accomplishment of educational goals are available.

5. Participate in the district-level decision-making process to establish and review the districts goals and objectives related to instructional programs.

6. Engage instructional staff in evaluating and selecting instructional tools and materials to meet student learning needs.

7. Actively support the efforts of others to achieve district goals and objectives and campus performance objectives (academic excellence indicators).

8. Plan and provide staff development for fine arts teachers that supports instructional programs, incorporates input from teachers and principals, and is consistent with the districts mission.

9. Observe classroom instruction and provide feedback and assistance to fine arts teachers to facilitate instructional improvement and innovation. Participate in implementing the designated teacher appraisal system.

10. Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each students eligibility to participate in band.

11. Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, and UIL.

12. Support band booster club activities.

13. Develop and implement plans that fulfill the requirements of the districts curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.

14. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.

15. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).

16. Work with other member of the staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.

17. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.

Budget

18. Develop and administer fine arts department budget based on documented program needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed prudently.

20. Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.

21. Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets related to the program.

22. Oversee cleaning, repairing, and storing of all instruments and equipment.

23. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

Classroom and Personnel Management

24. Prepare, review, and revise job descriptions in fine arts department.

25. Select, train, evaluate, and supervise department secretary and make recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.

26. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

27. Manage student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

28. Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips activities and arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.

29. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

30. Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant band director(s)

Student Growth and Development

31. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

32. Be a positive role model for students and support mission of the school district.

Communication

33. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with principals, teachers, staff, parents, and community members.

34. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

Professional Growth and Development

35. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.

36. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

37. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the band area.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise, evaluate, and recommend the hiring and firing of department secretary

Monitor the performance of assistant band director(s)

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals; automated external defibrillator (AED)

Posture: Prolonged sitting/standing; frequent kneeling/squatting; bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; frequent walking/marching

Lifting: Regular moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); may lift and move musical instruments

Environment: Work outside and inside; exposure to extreme temperatures (hot, cold and inclement weather), humidity, and prolonged sunlight/ work on uneven or slippery surfaces; frequent exposure to noise

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent district and statewide travels
